Latest Gig at the Comedy Village in the Village

Well Finnaly, this place has a name that makes sense.. I had a spot a the Comedy Village the night before Halloween, no I didnt have to bark for it, as I hate that shit. the crowd was almost entirely from Europe, Belgium, London, etc.. etc.. with One angry Uganda resident, who looked more Pakistani, then Uganda, I hung out till about 12:30, when the crowd wittled down to about 10 or 12 exausted audince hostages all itching to look for the right moment to escape after 8 or 10 comics have graced the stage including barkers due spots for there indentured comedy club slavery. Expectations where low so I set out to go through some of my usual bits and forced my self to try out one new one , it had decent response but needs a bit more of my personal touch. I noticed the light, and queried if that if that infact was the light or there had been some technical dificulty. thank fully Johny D, let me know it was and that I had better close on something else, I pulled out the nervouse nyer on the q line and killed with that. the set was decent but its becomeing clearer and clearer that each room has its own vibe, the Comedy Village is primarily a work the crowd room, escpecially on a sunday afer midnight, maybe not if its packed on a sat, but its kind of one of those rooms you have to work the crowd and then do a bit, then work the crowd and then do a bit. I was followed by Todd Barry who happened to drop in, thankfully I closed with a good bit . I used to follow Todd at the Comedy Celler maybe 10 or 12 years ago when we where both late nigters at the cellar starting out, he was somewhat ahead of me on the ladder at the time. Todd went up and had very good set, his dry sarcasm and crowd work regarding how excited he was to be at such a hot gig had most of the comics and the crowd laughing. I need to create or find better gigs than this, and yet I need this kind of gig to experiment and work on new material .
its like you hate working a crappy audience for a laugh but at the same time it makes you a better crowd commic and gives you room to not feel so uptight about your material. None the less Im not sure how much longer these gigs will last being that I refuse to bark for the spot and have little Industry clout as of yet.

Showtime was 9pm and I had no idea how many tickets where sold to my show or to the other 3 going on that night, to top it off I was having a panick attack , because only 1 of the comics I booked that night had showed up as far as I knew, somewhere around 9:05 the mic called me and let me knwo he was parking, followed by the other 7 or 8 comics randomly calling in the next 10 min, we started 9:15 with Rich Aronavich warming the packed crowd in into a comfortable state of giddyness and the night went very smooth, but I found that all the panic and lack of sleep the night before had some effect on me after about 10 min into my set, I think I will be bringing water with me If I am to do more than 10 min from now on. Im starting to realize that I dont write anything in the least bit funny in these updates nor do I plan to or not plan to. If any one is reading this , go to my next show and you will see some of the best standups in nyc, also interesting point , I noticed from variouse emails and things I read from sheckymagazine that alot of shows where cancelled, I had nothing of the kind because I was out there everday that week promoting the show to variouse tourists in the area and one of my strongest selling points was "this is the kind of show where you wont see alot of commics who have done cable or network tv, these comics are more on the cutting edge and nothing PC, people seemed fascinated ,
"really you mean none of that shit I see on cable !" was one ny'er reaction, yes that was my selling point "NO TV CREDITS , what so ever" and we had a packed houes.

Did Larrys Invite only show in fort green , had a good time, audience was manily PRAT (art school ) College Kids, cool.
Place had interestingly experimental feel to it, tried a wierd thing where I took a ventriloquest act and used her on stage as my dummy, in some kind of surreal vision I had before I got on stage.

Showed up after being called twice by the show runner to come down and do a set, wierd never been called twice and asked to come do an open mike, non the less showed up , had a great set..did alot of new shit and made some jaded angry comics laugh, nice room for experimetal stuff, the mc turned out to be girlfriend of my friend Rick Shapiro, who just landed something big wth HBO, anyway..at the same time shes an accqaintance of my friend Richard Shulman, small world..smaller comedy world ..I might do this again, if I can find her phone number. Have been invited to do show in brooklyn in Prospect Heights/ Fort Green Area.

STAND UP NY TUESDAY
I showed up curiouse and hung out for a half hour, unfortunatly the list was filled up and I was told to call next monday for a spot, that sucked, but expected. the room seemd ok that night, but it had something comics should be wary of, overly anxouse laughing at anything stupid and shocking, the comic who laughs extremly loud even when its not funny, which doesnt do shit for you since when you try it on a real audience you will be in for quiet a surprise, all comic laughter has to be taken with a grain of salt, not that I ever understood the reason for that saying.

OPEN MIKE IN THE EXTREME EAST VILLAGE I did an open mike in the extreme east village, it was greatebecause the audience was mainly casual spoken word or musician types, worried at first that the room was to east village I was pleasantly surprised that I had enough east village in me to kill the room, without doing a set about anti gov , kill bush etc...pandering. I did my Russian character from brighton beach, and got a huge applause break, I not these things because thats basicly my payment for all the struggle, and no breaks all these years... I refuse to mention the place for fear others will come (that is other comics). yes thats how bad Iv become, PS thanks Latch.. those that know, know those that dont , dont.

REVIEW OF RECENT STAND UP OPEN MIKE ROOMS

Im going to start reviewing open mike rooms in the most frank and honest manner, at considerable risk to my carear, wich has recently returned to open mike scene becasue PIPS comedy club where I have toiled for months, killing at every open mike and every guest spot I was given , and any chance I got to perform so as to break in to the club as a regular guest performer, its currently temp closed, shut down the lights are out all the time.
I will start with the PIPS open mike, wich no longer exits or is in the 3rd mimension.(none of this is mean to be humorouse or stand up like so dont critic it or judge it, once again I am convinced I am typeing into a black internet hole)

PIPS : Pips initialy was a great open mike, the reason is, that actual audienc strolled in , thats right not other self obsorbed comics, but real people, sometimes 20 or 40 by nights end, this made it a truly great place to develop material test or grow ones stuff, nothing in the city could compare to it, the other great thing about it was not that many comics new about it, or where afraid of the so called tough brooklyn crowsd , wich is a myth , if it was funny it receaved huge response, and personal response where poeple came to you after the show and thanked you I speak for my self and others who had great sets on occasion, and if you bombed no one gave you a beating , you took your hits and prepared your self for the next time. Ofcourse all good things get shitier, as time progressed , more people found out and it became a cavalcade of true amatuers. the staff started to get more irritated and there was more of how can I make use of these losers
feeling as apposed to let me let these guys develope so at least I can use them as good yet cheap performes on the weekend.
the horrific thing that changed was Joey Gay stoped showing up at open mike, booking agent and partner in the club...and a great stand up.. Im not kissing up.. its just that the room had a pro that did a set everynight ..bringing the room up...it went down from there turning into an all comics room where, it became 10 bucks a spot.. I wont say anymore , you get the poc

PIPS COMEDY CLUB

THE HEAVILY MEDICATED SHOW IS CANCELLED/POSTPONED FOR ANOTHER DATE. It seems that Pips Comedy Club is in LIMBO once again, all of the shows have been cancelled there including weekends and open mike on wends, perhaps it will re-open , I hope so, perhaps not , I don’t know and it seems the owner has not decided either.
It could be that one of the oldest comedy clubs in NYC, could be become a kokab house or a fish restuarant..will some one save it, I dont know.. I know I dont have that kind of C-flow, but perhaps someone I know does, will Woody Allen Come back and by the place, Andrew Dice CLay, Richard Jenni (hes got some bucks). The place where myself (unknown) and so many well known comics performed for the first time , maybe I can start a movement... but its in limbo so I cant nor would it be appropriate to start a save PIPS campaign,
Because it might reopen, tomorrow!

OLEG'S NY COMEDY SCENE AND OPEN MIKE BLOG After 3 packed weekend shows at PIPS, during the FROM RUSSIA WITH LAUGHS SHOW, Im back to the old grind , hittin the open mikes and trying out new material and stories, strugling with the duality of just making people laugh and wanting to tell more of a realistic story, ( as well as sifting a slew of material I refuse to do ) although I enjoy both in the long run its more satifying to tell or create a story based on a truth, even if it is not exactly exact in its truthfullness or based on actual events.

The NYC scene is tougher and tougher to get regualar weekend guest spots for an someone without tv credits, ( too many pathetic jerks looking to make themselves feel worthwhile or Important, by making others anoyed (yes Im jaded) planning to produce something my self in the Manhatten. and will do another FROM RUSSIA WITH LAUGHS SHOW at PIP ( If things work out , in need of Russian American Headliner.)

I think I might be changing the name of this site soon, or I might be ahead of my self , but Iv been doing spots at pips on weekends, latest update I went over to pips to catch the 11 pm show and see if I can get a spot, initially I was told no, because 5 other comics had shown up who regularly play here, one of them mysteriously left, leaving me the opportunity, the 11pm audience was a rare treat in that it was packed and the group consisted of very well dressed adults, the room was hot. One of the owners decided to turn the night into a contest for those of us doing short guest spots, I paid little attention to this and resolved my self to remember to try out at least one new bit, I went on right before the head liner "JJ RAMIREZ" , following the other 3 contestants and immediately went into a character I often open with, the set went great in spite of realizing that I had forgotten to do anything new as well as forgetting a hair piece wig I use for a another bit just as I hit the stage. I won the contest as well a paid weekend spot( I’m not sure what the date is) , could this be the start of something positive I hope so, also the owners are producing a Russian comedian them night for May 27th, 28th weekend.

Began my Wends open mick tour around the city, after looking over my various choices, underground uptown seemed like a good choice but I was too lazy and to trek to 107 st, I decided to make my way downtown to the comedy cellar where I stood outside in the frigid temperature demeaning my self , waiting to get into a crapy open mike, if ever there was one, just so as to perform at the infamous comedy cellar where I used to have a regular spot all be it non paid at 1 am on Thursdays 10 years, or is it 12 years ago now, here I was waiting outside with a bunch of other a-holles, waiting to pay 10 bucks so I can talk to myself in front of other bitter open mikers, I realized this was shit and that this thing wasn’t even set up in the least to try and invite any real audience , no sign of a show or anything inviting in the least just a private club of assholes who don’t want to be in the club, at least some of the other mikes around town have a chance of some straggler of the street here it was all the same faces my self included, I spit on the ground it stood on and swore Id be back when they pay me, or beg me, or fuckin I can walk in during any show and say put me on now. Went home to see my son, figured I could go to pips later that night. Did pips again, had a good set, one of the owners gave me a good job pat on the back , mc mentioned there goanna give me weekend guest spot, haven’t heard anything yet, tried 3 new bits about my home life etc..

Droped by pips Wendsday open mike, wasnt planning it because I had just came from seeing my grandfather at coney island hospital where he had been transfered to a surgical unit, because they had no room at the other section, or so they said, I asked the nurse why he wasnt monitored or hooked up to anything , she said well "we can tell if he starts to breath heavy", I knew he had to leave there soon. I left him there asleep covered by a thin planket sorounded by strangers who could care less and the sound of aganizing yellping from some other confined torture chamber.
I pulled my self to gether , and drover over to pips, not realy planning on perfroming , perhaps just looking to clear my mind, or fill it with something. the room was actually doing not bad for a a cold Wends , abtout 20 udience , although a few of them where under the age of 18. I did my set and felt it went well , doing mainly material I had done in the past with one new bit, on looking back I realize the set had missed many of its puchline's and went over well because of varouse improvising I enganged in, my head was somewhat in it and the other part knew I was unprepared even though I had done those bit thousands of times before, I think the room is picking up , im gonn have to go back and start tryng completly new stuff there.

PIPS Wednesday

I decided to drop by PIPS Comedy Club on its Wednesday open mike, a place I have been avoiding for fear of being part of some kind of freak show, or being subjected to the comatose stares of morons from my own neighborhood. After returning to my home in Sheepshead bay, taking care of my house duties, I forced my self to make to make the effort. My apprehension due to wanting to be seen on a more favorable night by the owner of the club. On arriving I'm pleasantly surprised that the host is someone I know, a unknown comic by the name of Johnny Deluxe, unfortunately the audience is primarily the wait staff/ bar staff and a few local hard head types, seemingly too drunk to register anything other than,” hou ya doing , how you doing”. I place my self last on the list, and enter the stage following an almost brawl between the mc and a audience member. Surprisingly the set went great, I leave the stage shaking hands with my audience and I got a word of approval from one of the new owners, he tells he wants to see me again, good job and so on, also I meat Igor Zhivanotsky, the guy who slapped Tony Sopranos Sister in the 3rd season. He Invites me to do a show in the city at Dillons Lounge Thurs 17th, Feb. So it seems that even doing a gig at the end of Brooklyn in front of a small group of local restaurant owners, can lead to something.

Most Recent Open Mike Visit At the Comedy Cellar

After sprinting out of work in my Weehawken NJ , office building, I took the e train to the comedy cellar Wednesday night open mike, its been a few months since I had attended this, because I like to break my scene up, and Iv been doing Mondays at underground lounge, the scene consisted of many familiar faces and a few surprising hotties, always a pleasant change from the hags and angry bobs I'm used to seeing. Luckily I was a able to push my way in to get the first spot, which can be the good and bad. The place was actually packed for an open mike, that is with other open mikers. The audience seemed to not have thawed out from the outside freeze, and I could tell most if not everyone was still making notes on what there own sets would consist of. My set went decent and I was happy that I forced my self to try out some new material , even though much of it died, the joy of not forcing my self to do shit that I know works was reward enough, inspite of having to pay 10 bucks for a cup of coffee.
